Abstract

PURPOSE:Glass for optical fiber having low loss even in an infrared region of wave length >=2mum, free from toxicity and moisture absorption, comprising MgF2, YF3, or a fluoride of lanthanide element, and AlF3. CONSTITUTION:Glass consisting of (a) 20-55mol% mixture wherein MgF2 is replaced or partially replaced by one or more fluorides selected from CaF2, SrF2, and BaF2, (b) 5-50mol% one or more fluorides selected from YF3 and a fluoride of lanthanide element, and (c) 20-65mol% AlF3. If the ratio of (a) component to (b) is out of the above-mentioned range, the glass is undesirably clouded and crystallized. If the ratio of the component (c) is less than the above-mentioned range, the glass is also clouded and crystallized, and when the ratio is more than the range, the glass becomes glassy state, but it becomes translucent and is not transparent.
