Abstract

PURPOSE: To make it possible to convert SO2 into S sufficiently even in the presence of steam in a gas containing, the SO2 and steam, by reacting H2S and S formed in the reducing step of the gas with C with the unreacted SO2 under preferred conditions.
CONSTITUTION: A gas obtained by concentrating SO2 in a waste gas from the coal combustion with the adsorption and desorption steps and a gas containing steam in an amount equimolar or more with the SO2 are introduced from a piping 1 into a reducing reaction tank 3 to which a carbonaceous material, e.g. coke, is supplied. All the SO2 in the gas is reduced to H2S in the tank 3, and the gas is then fed to a Claus reaction apparatus 6. On the other hand, a desorbed gas is fed to the apparatus 6 through a by-pass pipe 2. In the step, the ratio between the flow rates to the apparatus 3 and the pipe 2 is controlled at 2:1 by a flow control valve 5 through a controlling apparatus 7. Thus, the ratio of flow rates H2S/SO2 in the gas at the inlet for the apparatus 6 is adjusted to 2, and the unreacted SO2 is reacted with H2S by the Claus process and converted into S.
