Abstract

PURPOSE: To form an adsorbent of superior adsorptive selectivity for mixed gases having resembling gas particle sizes by controlling the pore sizes of an industrially produced carbonaceous adsorbent.
CONSTITUTION: A carbonaceous adsorbent 27 having ≥0.5nm pore sizes is packed in a reactor 21, and mixed gases of hydrocarbon and N2 having molecular sizes more than the pore sizes of the adsorbent are supplied therein through a piping 29 and a valve 23. The concn. of the hydrocarbon in the gas flowing in the pipings 29 and 30 is measured with an analyzer 28 and the flow rate of the gas with a flowmeter 26, thence the amount of hydrogen adsorption is measured and is controlled to a predetermined amount. Next, the valves 23, 24 are closed and the reactor 21 is heated to predetermined temp. in a heating furnace 22, so that the thermally decomposed matter of hydrocarbon is deposited in the inlets of the pores of the adsorbent 27. At this time, the pressure is prevented from rising above the set pressure by a pressure regulating valve 25. Thence, the heating furnace 22 is stopped, and the gas in the reactor 21 is substituted by flowing an N2 gas, to cool the adsorbent 27.
