Abstract

PURPOSE: To start the cooling of the side faces of a well from after the plane inclusive of the axial center of a casting ring, extend a cooling zone and improve casting speed by forming the well by covering the side faces of a V-shaped channel formed by the outside circumference of the casting ring.
CONSTITUTION: Molten metal poured from a tundish 3 into a molten metal holder 5 forms a well 4. Cooling of the molten metal is started from the position (a) of the outside circumferential surface of a casting ring 6 and the cooling is continued up to a position (b). On the other hand, the side surface side of the well 4 is transferred in a molten state because the side wall surfaces 5-b of the holder 5 position. The cooling of said side is started when it goes to the position (b) of the plane inclusive axial center and afterwards, where a shell is formed. Hence, the transfer speed of the molten metal in the well 4 can be made sufficiently slower than the ingot drawing speed because an inner size (d) is sufficiently larger than a clearance size (c). In casting with a belt, the cooling is started by an a side face rotator 12 in the plane position (b)-a inclusive of the axial center of a casting belt wheel like mentioned above.
