Abstract

PURPOSE:To perform rolling under high pressure by holding a work roll with a backup roll consisting of separation type sleeve roll rotatable with a static pressure bearing and thereby improving allowable load of the bearing. CONSTITUTION:With rotation of a work roll 10 and intermediate roll 11 which are driven to rotate, a separation type backup roll 12 made up of sleeve roll becomes feely rotatable by supplied oil and pushed upward. Lower static pressure area tends to become narrower and upper pressure area tends to become broader. However, a large quantity of oil is going to enter the upper static pressure pocket 15 while a small quantity of oil is going to enter the lower static pressure pocket through an oil supply hole 14 and a communicating hole 17. Pressure difference is formed between upper and lower static pressure pockets to resist the rolling load and to cope with delicate change of the rolling load. Since the backup roll is properly separated into plural number, the transversal rigidity is sufficiently large.
