PURPOSE:To automatically adjust a white balance in the course of image pickup, by providing photoelectric conversion elements on diaphragm blades, and adjusting the video signal amplifier gain. CONSTITUTION:On diaphragm blades 25... are provided photoelectric conversion elements 26a-26c corresponding to red, green and blue, respectively. In accordance with detection outputs of these elements 26a-26c are controlled variable gain amplifiers 20-22 having a gain characteristic by which a color difference signal component of a composite video signal 35 becomes zero at the time of image pickup of a white object to be photographed, under various illuminating conditions. Accordingly, even in case when the illuminating conditions, etc. have been varied in the course of image pickup, a white balance is adjusted automatically, and a satisfactory image pickup is executed.
