CONSTITUTION:An input pattern P is inputted to the first and second feature extraction parts 1, 4, the first feature f1 is extracted by the extraction part 1, matching of this feature f1 and the first feature dictionary 2 corresponding to said feature is taken by a similarity degree calculating part 3, and its degree of similarity is calculated. When the degree of similarity which has been calculated in this way has exceeded a prescribed threshold level, a selected category from the dictionary 2 is selected, and is sent out to a maximum value detection part 8.
