Abstract
PURPOSE: To rapidly convert sulfur into sulfuric acid in a compact treatment apparatus using no chemicals and catalysts without the needs for the exchange and regeneration of catalysts by bringing an H2S-containing gas in an oxygen-free atmosphere into contact with spark discharge in the presence of CO2.
CONSTITUTION: In the inside of a ceramic cylindrical reactor tube 1, peripherally perforated electrodes 2 and 4 having spiral gas pathways 2b and 4b and cylindrical conductors 2a and 4a of stainless steel are provided on its outer side, and also discharge electrodes 3 and 5 having spiral gas pathways 3a and 5a are provided on its inner side. A gas to be treated is introduced through an inlet 1a and then the switch 12 of the circuit C is closed, whereupon relays 13 and 14 are operated, contacts 15 and 16 are closed, and discharge occurs between the electrodes 2 and 3. After the lapse of a certain period of time, the contact 15 is opened by operating the relay 13 and discharge occurs between the electrodes 2 and 3 and also between electrodes 3 and 4. After the lapse of a certain period of time thereafter, the contact 16 is opened by the relay 14, and discharge occurs between all the electrodes. The gas is ionized and reacted while passing through the spiral gas pathways 2b, 3a, 4b, and 5a, during which H2S is converted into SO3 and then discharge from the outlet 1b.
