Abstract
PURPOSE:To make the continuous operation of an electromagnetic stirrer possible within the thermal limit to use of the coil part of said stirrer and decrease its capacity by cooling said coil part with cooling oil, and coolin this oil with cooling fins. CONSTITUTION:When 3-phase AC electric power is supplied to a coil 6 through the outlet wire 25 of an electromagnetic stirrer 2, magnetic force is generated and the molten steel in the shell of an ingot 9 is stirred. In this case, if large electric current is supplied to the coil 6 in order to perform efficient stirring, the coil 6 generates Joule heat. Thereupon, the coil 6 is cooled at all times by the coil cooling oil 14 sealed in a protecting inside box 3. While the oil 14 elevated of temp. by the coil 6 descends in cooling fins 13 by natural convection, and it is heat exchanged by cooling water 22 and is thereby cooled. The oil 14 in the box 3 is put in an unoxidative atomosphere by gaseous N2 for the purpose of oxidation prevention.
