Abstract
PURPOSE:To make the central wavelength of transmitted light changeable by disposing magneto- optic crystals having specific thickness ratios and polarizers alternately in a longitudinal direction and applying variable magnetic fields on the top and bottem surfaces thereof in the titled filter used form optical communication fields and the like. CONSTITUTION:With the thickness of a magneto-optic crystal 1 defined as l1, and the thicknesses of said crystals 2-6 next to this defined as 2l1-6l1 respectively, the crystals 1-6 are disposed between polarizers 7-12 of which the planes of polarization are paralleled to each other and which are disposed in parallel, thence electromagnets 14, 16 of variable electric currents are disposed on the top and bottom surfaces of the crystals 1-6, whereby an optical filter is formed. When the incident light of linearly polarized waves is made incident perpendicularly from one side of the polarizer 7, the plane of polarization of the transmitted light is rotated by Faraday effect. Therefore, if the angle of rotation of polarization is taken at pi with respect to the crystal 1 at the time when incident light 16 having various wavelengths is made incident, the angle of rotation is integer times the pi with respect to the remaining crystals 2-6. Thereby, the central wavelength of transmitted light 17 is determined and if the intensity of magnetic fields is changed, the central wavelength of the transmitted light 17 is changed.
