Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain readily a high-MW polysiloxane having excellent storage stability, by dehydration-condensing a low-MW polysiloxane obtained by (co)hydrolysis of a chlorosilane, using a carbodiimide as a condensation catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A hydroxyl group-containing low-MW polysiloxane is obtained by dissolving, in an organic solvent, a chlorosilane represented by the general formula: RSiCl3 and/or R2SiCl2, wherein R is a hydrocarbyl, e.g., phenyltrichlorosilane or dimethoxydichlorosilane, and pouring the solution into a large amount of water to effect (co)hydrolysis. Next, the high-MW polysiloxane of the purpose is obtained by dissolving the low-MW polysiloxane in an organic solvent, and dehydration-condensing the polysiloxane at a temperature of about 120°C using as a condensation catalyst a carbodiimide, e.g., dibenzylcarbodiimide or diethylcarbodiimide.
