Abstract

PURPOSE: An oligomer (or polymer) useful as a versatile material having highly reactive conjugated double bonds of a furan ring.
CONSTITUTION: A cyclic or linear oligo- (or poly-)ester represented by formulaIor II, wherein R is H or an alkyl and n is an integer. The above compound is prepared by reacting, under heating, 1mol of 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid, with at least about 1mol of a condensing agent (N-substituted-2-halopyridinium salt, e.g., N-methyl-2-chloropyridinium iodide) and at least about 2mol of a hydrogen halide trapping agent (e.g., tri-n-butylamine) in an organic solvent (e.g., pyridine, benzene) in a nitrogen atmosphere. Among the above compounds, those oligoesters having a structure analogous to an ionophore (nonactin, monensin) have a probability of developing physiological activities.
