PURPOSE:To perform smoothing of a binary character picture in read time and to obtain an output with high quality, by processing the picture based on line information existing in three scanning lines; a scanning line for noted run and upper and lower scanning lines. Each run information stored is sequentially read out from the memory 2 and stored temporarily in a run register 3 noted for exclusive use of each run, a left run register 4, a right run register 5, an upper run register 6 and a lower run register 7 respectively. Further, the processing is made at a white run processing section 8 and a black run processing section 9 depending whether the noted run R1 is white or black.
