Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a miniaturized and simply constructed optical switch by adhering a ferromagnetic thin film to the peripheral surface of each one end of input and output optical fibers so that they are opposed to each other and attaching a driving coil for the generation of magnetic field to the surroundings of the movable coil of input optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:Ferromagnetic films with strong coercive force are adhered to the peripheral surfaces of the surroundings of ends 5, 6 and 7 of input optial fiber 1 and output optical fibers 2 and 3. These films are magnetized so that different magnetic poles are generated on the surroundings of ends 5, 6 and 7. When current is fed to a coil 10 to generate a vertical magnetic field, the input fiber 1 and output fiber 2 are matched by the magnetic absorbing force. If reversed current flows into a coil 10, the input fiber 1 and the output fiber 2 are matched. Thus, the miniaturized and simply constructed optical switch can be obtained.
