Abstract
PURPOSE:To perform scrapping of a hull efficiently and speedily, by a method wherein cracks are produced at a plurality of parts of a hull, and the hull is exploded after cooling it to an embrittling temperature. CONSTITUTION:First, a ship 1 to be scrapped is brought into a building 2 for cooling. Next, initial cracks 9 to constitute starting points for brittle fracture are provided at a plurality of parts of inside steel plates of the ship 1. Then, liquid nitrogen contained in a liquid-nitrogen storage tank 5 is fed into each hold of the ship 1 through a temperature controller 6 and a pipe 7 and is sprayed all over, and fans 8 are rotated to stir the sprayed fumes of the liquid nitrogen, whereby the ship is cooled to a temperature at which the steel plates constituting the hull of the ship 1 are substantially embrittled. Subsequently, explosives 10 placed at appropriate locations of the ship 1 are detonated, and brittle fractures are induced in hull component members by the explosive radiant energy to dismantle the entire body of the ship instantaneously.
