Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain excellent overheat protection effect by a method wherein specified material having a temperature vs. pressure charactersitics satisfying with a fixed condition is employed as metal hydride to supply hydrogen in the interior of a cover tube at abnormal overheating. CONSTITUTION:Zr element or hydride of alloy consisting of no less than 20%, by weight, of Zr and at least one element selected from the group consisting of Ti, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Pd, Cu and rare earth elements, is employed as metal hydride to supply hydrogen at abnormal overheating. The hydrogen occlusion equilibrium pressure vs. temperature and hydrogen release equilibrium pressure vs. temperature characteristics, which the metal hydride must have, are shown as indicated in the attached drawing. Owing to the charactersitics as mentioned above, the transmutation and deterioration of heat collecting plate at the abnormal overheating such as no-water operation or the like can be effectively prevented.
