Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a wide-band transmission and reception gain characteristics by using an acoustic matching layer formed by stacking matching plates which are a quarter and a half as thick as the wavelength of an ultrasonic wave radiated to the electrode of a piezoelectric oscillator. CONSTITUTION:A piezoelectric oscillator 11 is equipped with electrodes 15 and 16, and on the electrode 15, a matching plate 13 a quarter as thick as the wavelength of a radiated ultrasonic wave and a matching plate 14 a half as thick as the wavelength are stacked, thus forming a matching layer. The piezoelectric oscillator having the matching plate with 1/4 wavelength thickness has double hump frequency characteristics having peak distortion at the center part, and the piezoelectric oscillator having the matching plate with 1/2 wavelength thickness has frequency characteristics having a peak at the center part, so both the matching plates are stacked on each other to obtain flat ripple-free total frequency characteristics with the same band width that the 1/4-wavelength thickness matching plate has.
