Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a nontoxic, nonyellowing urethane prepolymer having excellent heat stability, by reacting an alkylenediol or polypropylene glycol with an excess of an aliphatic diisocyanate.
CONSTITUTION: In reacting an excess of an aliphatic diisocyanate with a diol at a diisocyanate/diol molar ratio ≥4, said reaction is carried out under heating by using, as said diol, a mixture of at least one member selected from (A) an alkylenediol having two prim. hydroxyl groups and a branch in the main chain extending between the two hydroxyl groups and (B) polyethylene glycol, MW ≥190, or polypropylene glycol having both terminals to which prim. hydroxyl groups are introduced by use of ethylene oxide or the like. The resulting reaction mixture is stripped of excessive diisocyanate, etc., and further purified by heat-treatment.
