Abstract

PURPOSE:To avoid omission or incompletion of characters and to improve reliability of printers by a construction wherein a mechanism for detecting holes or cutouts in an ink ribbon is provided at the ink ribbon running part in printers having ink ribbons. CONSTITUTION:A mechanism 11 for detecting holes or joints in an ink ribbon 1 is provided in a running path along which the ink ribbon 1 is drawn out from a stocker case 2 and fed up to a printing section. When a part of the ink ribbon including a hole passes through the mechanism 11, an alarm signal is supplied to a control section 15 thereby to inform an operator of a need of exchange of the ink ribbon 1. The detecting mechanism 11 is so constructed, for example, that a plate 12 formed of a conductive substance is bonded on the ribbon running surface, the ribbon 1 is made to run on the plate 12, and a comb-like plate 13 formed of a conductive substance is disposed thereon to press the ribbon 1. When the plate 12 comes into contact with the plate 13, an alarm signal is supplied to the control section 15.
