Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce a vinyl chloride polymer having a high bulk density and excellent gelling property and forming moldings with good mechanical properties, by carrying out (co)polymerization of vinyl chloride in an aqueous medium in a manner of two-stage polymerization under specified conditons.
CONSTITUTION: A vinyl chloride monomer (if necessary, together with other copolymerizable monomer) is polymerized (to a conversion of about at least 50%) in an aqueous medium in the presence of an oil-soluble polymerization initiator such as lauroyl peroxide, to form a high-MW vinyl chloride (co)polymer, polymerization degree ≥600 (1st stage polymerization). Then, a vinyl chloride monomer (if necessary, together with a copolymerizable monomer) is added to the polymerization system and, the polymerization temperature is raised and/or a chain transfer agent is added and the polymerization is continued to form a polymer having a polymerization degree (about 200W600) lower than that in the 1st stage polymerization (2nd stage polymerization).
