Abstract

PURPOSE: To facilitate the processing of polyacetylene, by processing a modified polyacetylene obtained by treating polyacetylene with a doping strong acid and then hot-contacting the processed modified polyacetylene with an aqueous medium to regenerate it as polyacetylene.
CONSTITUTION: A modified polyacetylene is obtained by treating polyacetylene with a doping strong acid (e.g., sulfuric acid). This modified polyacetylene is dissolved in a solvent (e.g., sulfuric acid, aqueous alkali solution) and then processed into a shape, e.g., film, fiber, powder or impregnated product. This shape can be solidified by evaporating the solvent by heating or by contacting it with a solvent (e.g., water, acetone) which is miscible with the solvent and which is a poor solvent for the modified polyacetylene. The processed product can be regenerated as the starting polyacetyelen by hot-contacting it with an aqueous medium such as water or an aqueous acid solution.
