Abstract

PURPOSE: The chlorate salt in a saline solution is decomposed with hydrochloric acid as the concentration of hydrochloric acid in the solution is kept above a specific value, thus permitting the decomposition of chlorate salts under unhibition the formation of chlorine dioxide gas.
CONSTITUTION: When chlorate salts in a saline solution is decomposed with hydrochloric acid, the concentration of hydrochloric acid is kept above 150g/l in the solution to permit the docomposition of chlorate salts without formation of chlorine dioxide gas. Especially, in the electrolysis of alkali chloride to produce alkali hydroxide except the diaphragm method, the slight improvement in the dechlorination process for the circulated saline solution lowers the concentration of chlorine dioxide in the recovered chlorine gas to such a level as the recovered chlorine can be mixed with the anode chlorine. Further, even when the recovered chlorine is used to produce alkali hypochlorite, this process is advantageous, because it needs no facility for treating chlorine dioxide gas.
