Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A methyl-norbornene derivative expressed by the formula (the methyl group is substituted at any one of the 1'-, 4'-, 5'- or 6'-position of the ring).
EXAMPLE: 1-(1'-Methylnorborn-5'-en-2'-yl)-2-methylpent-1-en-3-ol.
USE: A prefume having the sandalwood fragrance.
PROCESS: Methylcyclopentadiene is subjected to the Diels-Alder reaction with acrolein to give an adduct, which is then condensed with diethyl ketone in the presence of an alkali. The resultant compound is then reduced to afford the methyl-norbornene derivative expressed by the formula.
