Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the pull-out of a plastic optical fiber from a cylindrical body formed of a notched part in the corner on the inner side in the end part on the effective surface side and to improve the accuracy of polishing by inserting said fiber into said cylindrical body and heating the leading end thereof. CONSTITUTION:A cylindrical body 1 formed of a notched part 1a in the corner on the inner side of the end face on an effective surface side A is prepared, and a or >=2 pieces of plastic optical fibers 2 are inserted into the body 1 from its opposite side B, so that the leading ends thereof are faced near the end face of the side A. When the leading ends are heated in this state, the outside diameter of the leading ends of the fibers 2 is expanded and part thereof is packed in the part 1a. When these are heated with a heater having a smooth surface in contact with said surface, the effective surface is smoothed and therefore not finishing is required but additional finishing by polishing of said surface is equally well. When a lens-like projecting part 2b is formed, it may be kept intact or may be further finished by polishing.
