Abstract
PURPOSE: To carry out economically the production of a low-temperature baking emulsion of two-layer structure polymer particles, by forming a core polymer by radiation polymerization, adding a monomer mixture and a mixture consisting of a mercaptan and radiation-polymerizing the resulting mixture.
CONSTITUTION: A monomer mixture A consisting of 75.0W90.0wt% hydrophobic monomer containing one ethylenically unsaturated bond in the molecule, 5.0W 15.0wt% OH monomer, 1.0W5.0wt% acid monomer and 0.5W5.0wt% crosslinking monomer is dispersed in water containing a limited amount of a surfactant and ammonium acetate (viscosity modifier) and then polymerized by irradiation with an ionizing radiation. Then, to the above dispersion are added a mixture (B) consisting of 80.0W90.0wt% hydrophobic monomer, 10.0W20.0wt% OH monomer 1.0W5.0wt% acid monomer and 0.5W2.0wt% phosphoric acid-or sulfone-containing monomer and a mixture consisting of 9W12C mercaptan, and the resulting mixture is emulsion-polymerized by an ionizing radiation. Then, the resulting crosslinked core polymer particles are coated with a low-molecular weight polymer.
