Abstract

PURPOSE: Partially oxidative treatment of crystalline cellulose is effected by using a periodic acid compound to form amorphous cellulose that is hydrolyzable with cellulose.
CONSTITUTION: Crystalline cellulose such as wood pulp is treated with 0.6W 50mg, preferably 2W25mg equivalent per 1g cellulose at 25W120°C, preferably 25W90°C. The periodic acid compound is usually used in the form of aqueous solution and its concentration is preferably 0.05W0.5 normal and the amount of the solution is preferably 0.2W10l per 100g of cellulose.
