Abstract

PURPOSE:To enhance the thermal efficiency of a glass melting furnace by preheating a batch of glass in a rotary preheating furnace and glass cullet in a preheating apparatus with exhaust gas from the melting furnace and melting them in the melting vessel of the melting furnace. CONSTITUTION:A mixture of a batch of glass and fuel in a mixing tank 1 is fed into the kiln of a rotary furnace 3 and preheated with combustion exhaust gas generated in the kiln body 7 and combustion exhaust gas fed into the furnace 3 from a glass melting furnace 34. On the other hand, glass cullet 22 is put into a preheating apparatus 23 and preheated to about 500 deg.C by contact with combustion exhaust gas fed upward from the furnace 34. The preheated batch and cullet are then fed into a fore hearth 25, preheated to about 700 deg.C, and charged into the melting vessel of the furnace 34. Thus, the amount of glass melted per unit time can be increased by about 50% as compared to a conventional method.
