Abstract

PURPOSE: To save the driving energy of a blower, to reduce the size of a heat recovering apparatus and to reduce the cost by dividing all of fed oxygen into 2 parts and feeding one part to a sulfur combustion furnace and the other part to the catalyst of a converter.
CONSTITUTION: Air for oxidation is passed through a drying tower 1 and divided into 2 parts. One part is fed to a sulfur combustion furnace 3 through the 1st blower 2, and the other part to a converter 6 through the 2nd blower 4 and the 3rd blower 5. Solid starting material contg. sulfur is supplied to the furnace 3 and burned with the air fed through the blower 2 to produce sulfur dioxide. The sulfur dioxide concn. of the reactive mixed gas is kept at ≥14vol% high concn. at the outlet of the furnace 3. The gas contg. sulfur dioxide is passed through a waste heat boiler 7 and a steam superheater 8 to recover heat, and it is introduced into the converter 6, where the sulfur dioxide is led to catalyst beds 9, 11, 13, 15 to produce sulfur trioxide by conversion.
