Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent weld metal from dripping and prevent the decrease in the mechanical strength of a weld zone by controlling the inclination of a welding torch rotating and moving around the circumferential welding part by the combination of a specific guide member and a linear driving source in welding large diameter metallic pipes in their end parts.
CONSTITUTION: In welding the end parts of two pieces of large diameter metallic pipes 1, 1', a welding torch 16 is mounted to a carriage 12 moving on the outside circumference of a weld zone and welding is carried out. A guide member 24 provided with an arc groove 24a centering at the position of the weld end parts of the pipes 1, 1' is mounted to the carriage 12. The torch 16 is supported to a holder 28 secured to a mounting plate 26 having two legs 26a engaged freely slidably in the groove 24a. A linear driving source constituted of a rack 34 and a pinion 32 driven along the groove 24a is connected to the plate 26. The torch 16 moves around the welding position along the groove 24a, so that welding is accomplished by orienting the torch always to the direction of preventing weld metal from dripping.
