Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent deterioration in the transmitting characteristics due to lateral pressure produced during the curing of a reinforcing coat by interposing a coat of a thermoplastic resin between an optical fiber and the reinforcing coat.
CONSTITUTION: An optical fiber 1 of quartz or the like after spinning is coated with a coat 2 of a thermosetting resin with a low Young's modulus such as silicone resin in a coating vessel provided with dies (not shown), and a coat 3 of a thermoplastic resin such as nylon, polyethylene or fluororesin is formed on the outside of the coat 2 by a similar method. The coat 3 may be provided with a foamed structure. While running the coated fiber 1, reinforcing fibrous materials 4 composed of glass fibers or the like in the form of rovings are impregnated with a thermosetting resin 7 such as unsatd. polyester dropped from resin feeders 6, and the materials 4 are longitudinally stuck to the fiber 1, formed with dies 8, and passed through a heater 9 to cure the resin 7.
