Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain caustic alkali of high concn. with low voltage and high energy efficiency by interposing a diaphragm of specific moisture contents having electrical catalyst particles between a cathode and a cation exchange membrane on the cathode side, and electrolyzing the alkali chloride supplied into an anode chamber. CONSTITUTION:An electrolytic chamber provided with an anode and a cathode via a cation exhange membrane consisting of a perfluorocarbon polymer having a carboxylic acid group of 0.8meg/g exchange capacity on the cathode side and a sulfonic acid group on the anode side is prepared. A diaphragm of 25-60% moisture contens having electrical catalyst particles is interposed between the cathode and the cation exchange membrane on the cathode side of the electrolytic chamber, and an aq. alkali chloride soln. is supplied into the anode chamber of the electrolytic cell, whereby electrolysis is carried out. As a result, the gaseous H2 discharged and produced at the cathode and the electrical catalyst particles is conducted to the back of the cathode and therefore the electrolytic voltage is extremely low as compared to ordinary electrolyzing methods. An aq. alkali chloride soln. of high concn. of >=40% is obtained from the cathode chamber. Here, for example, powdery particles of platinum group metals are used for the electrical catalyst particles.
