Abstract

PURPOSE: A sealing material having closed cells with excellent airtightness and waterproofness, which is obtd. by expanding a compound consisting of a polyol, isocyanate compd., specified hydrophobic material, foaming agent and catalyst and destroying the cells just before the beginning of shrinkage.
CONSTITUTION: After a bituminous and/or similar hydrocarbon compd. is dissolved or dispersed in a polyol, the resulting soln. or dispersion is vigorously mixed with an added foaming agent such as water and catalyst such as dibutyltin dilaurate to obtain a polyurethane foam having closed cells. Then, just before the beginning of shrinkage of the foam, gas diffusion equilibrium between the inside and outside is promoted by removing an outer skin, or a minimum amt. of cellwalls among those forming the closed cells, sufficient to prevent shrinkage of the foam is destroyed by mechanical compression to the extent of 30W50%, to obtain a sealing material of permeability to air ≤20cc/cm2 at a thickness of 10cm.
