Abstract
PURPOSE: Porous glass fibers prepared by forming a layer of a metal or a compound thereof having a fluid permeability on a base material consisting of porous glass fibers, and having a thin layer effective for separation (a selective permeable layer) or active layer on the surface thereof.
CONSTITUTION: A layer of a metal or compound thereof is formed on the surface of porous hollow or solid glass fibers by the physical method, e.g. vacuum vapor deposition, or chemical method, e.g. impregnation with a solution and calcination. In this case, a thin layer of a metallic oxide, e.g. SiO2, ZrO2 or TiO2, is formed on the outer surface of the porous glass fibers consisting of SiO2 essentially by the vacuum vapor deposition method, the metallic oxide is deposited on a part near the inlets of the pores of the porous glass fibers. Therefore, the pores of the porous glass fibers have a shape in which the diameter is reduced only near the inlets thereof. These pores have the advantages that the flow resistance of a fluid consisting of many components in the selective separation of the fluid is smaller than any other pore having the same effective pore diameter.
