Abstract

PURPOSE:Glass fiber material for transmitting infrared rays, having no deliquescence, not crystallizing during drawing, obtained by preparing a composition shown by a specific formula. CONSTITUTION:An optical fiber material is obtained from a composition shown by the formula. In the formula, x, y, and z exhibit mol%, w=28-38, x=0-1, y=58-69, and z=2-10, when w+x+y+z=100. Namely given amounts of powdery BaF2, CdF3, ZrF4, and BeF2 are blended, and further, commonly with NH4F, heated at about 400 deg.C, fluorinated completely, melted at about 800 deg.C, and casted into a mold to give a glass rod for an optical fiber material. The unstability of crystallization of glass is improved by the addition of BeF2, so that the material transmits infrared rays of about 0.3-6mum and can be used as a fiber material for transmitting infrared rays having a longer wave length >= about 1.7mum.
