Abstract

PURPOSE: Steam is introduced into the reaction system where the reaction between aromatic hydrocarbon-formaldehyde resin and unsaturated dibasic acid is effected to remove formaldehyde as paraformaldehyde, thus producing the titled resin having good curing properties and giving cured products with high performance.
CONSTITUTION: (A) An aromatic hydrocarbon-formaldehyde resin is made to react with (B) an unsaturated dibasic acid, preferably maleic anhydride, and simultaneously (C) steam is introduced into the reaction system by preferably 5W 30pts.wt. per 100pts. of component A to remove formaldehyde formed out of the reaction system as paraformaldehyde. Preferably, the feed of steam is stopped as soon as possible, when the formation of formaldehyde comes to an end.
EFFECT: The reaction temperature is easily selected, free from gelation, further making it possible to shorten the manufacturing hours. Formaldehyde is readily recovered as well.
USE: FRP for anticorrosive purposes, gel coat and other uses.
