Abstract

PURPOSE:To enhance the liquid-leakage resistance of an alkaline battery, which is sealed by interposing a gasket between a battery case and a sealing plate, by applying a specific sealing agent to the sealing part of the battery. CONSTITUTION:In a battery which is sealed by interposing a gasket 7 between a battery case 5 and a sealing plate 6 before the opening end of the case 5 is bent inward, a specific sealing agent 8 is applied to the sealing part of the battery. The sealing agent 8 consists of asphalt, a permanent nondrying tacky matter and an organic solvent which dissolves these matters. The sealing agent 8, after being applied to the sealing part and dried, is heated so as to soften and melt asphalt contained in it and to make the sealing paint film non-porous before the battery is sealed. It is preferred that polybutene is used as the permanent nondrying tacky matter. As the organic solvent, toluene, xylene, petroleum benzine or the like is preferable. The sealing agent 8 is applied to at least one part of the opening end of the case 5, the gasket 7, and the periphery of the sealing plate 6. As a result, the work efficiency of applying the sealing agent 8 can be improved, and a homogeneous thin sealing film can be formed. In addition, the liquid-leakage resistance of the battery can be increased owing to the non-porous property of the sealing agent 8.
