Abstract

PURPOSE: Purified graphite is heated in a high-temperature plasma into carbon fiber and the carbon fiber is heat treated above a specific temperature to produce the titled fiber with high Young's modulus as well as flexibility.
CONSTITUTION: Graphite is treated with a mineral acid such as nitrohydrochloric acid and/or a halogen gas such as a chlorine gas and its mineral impurities are reduced to less than 80ppm. The resultant purified graphite 5 is placed on the support of carbon 4 positioned between pair of carbon electrodes 1. Then, as a narrowed gas such as argon is being flown from inlets 2, 3 toward the graphite 5, plasma is generated in the direct-current arc with the pair of electrodes 1 to heat up to 4,000W13,000°C electron temperature and form carbon fiber. The resultant carbon fiber is heated in an inert atmosphere of Ar or He at over 2,500°C to give graphite fiber.
