Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain low sulfur high chromium steel efficiently at a low cost by adding CaC2 to molten middle-carbon-content chromium steel of a prescribed Cr/C ratio in the presence of a prescribed CaO/SiO2 ratio thereby desulfurizing the same. CONSTITUTION:Chromium-contg. raw materials consisting essentially of high carbon ferrochromium lumps are melted, whereby molten middle carbon ferrochromium steel of 10-40 Cr/C and SiO2-contg. slag are made. Said slag of this case is controlled to basicity, that is, >=1.2 CaO/SiO2. Thence, an Si-contg. alloy (e.g.; ferrosilicon) is added to the molten metal in this state to reduce the Cr2O3 content in the slag, after which CaC2 is added to desufurize the steel. The addition of CaC2 decreases the original unit of CaC2 considerably by blowing CaC2 together with a carrier gas or Ar or the like into the molten metal in particular.
