Abstract

PURPOSE: To deactivate a catalyst for simplification of the process (the step for rectifying a recovered monomer can be omitted), by adding water diluted with a hydrocarbon with the aid of a surfactant to an olefin polymer slurry prepared by use of a Ziegler catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture consisting of water, a nonionic surfactant, HLB≤11, (e.g., polyoxyethylene alkyl ether, sorbitan alkyl ester) and a 3C or higher hydrocarbon (e.g., propane, octene-1) as a deactivator, is added to a slurry prepared by polymerizing an olefin with the aid of a Ziegler catalyst to deactivate the catalyst. The proportion used is such that 1.5W6mol of water and 0.2W3mol of the surfactant are preset per mol of the organometallic compound in the catalyst.
