Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent a oxidation of weld beads at the welding of a thick plate, narrow groove-shaped copper and copper alloys, by using a welding torch made small enough to be inserted into a narrow groove and performing a partial shielding, covering all over the welding surfaces with an inert gas.
CONSTITUTION: For example, edges of thick copper plates 1, 2 are prepared in single V groove and fixed after butting the root faces of edges, and a tightly closed type shield box 3 is attached to cover all over the groove faces. Thereafter, a sliding plate 6 provided with said small torch 4 and set screws 5 to adjust the height of the torch freely is attached to torch hole of the box 3. An inert gas in then introduced from a pipe 7 into the box 3 to cover the groove faces uniformly by a pressure equalizing plate 9. Now, the welding is performed by flowing e.g. gaseous Ar+He from the small torch 4.
