Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound, particularly useful for a food perfume, advantageously, by heating an allylacetic ester with a primary or secondary alcohol in the presence of a radical initiator, and lactonizing the resultant ester of a 6-hydroxy acid under acidic conditions.
CONSTITUTION: An allylacetic ester is heated with a primary or secondary alcohol in a molar amount of 10 times or more, preferably 20 times or more, that of the allylacetic ester in the presence of a radical initiator in a molar amount of 0.05W1.0 that of the radical initiator to give an ester of a 6-hydroxy acid, which is then lactonized under acidic conditions, preferably with sulfuric acid, in an aqueous solution in a concentration of preferably 70W95wt% to afford the titled compound easily from inexpensive industrially easily available raw materials in short steps. Preferably, a di-tert-butyl peroxide is used as the radical initiator, and the reaction temperature is 140W200°C in this case.
