Abstract
PURPOSE: To recover a mixture of tertanitromethane, nitric acid vapor and nitrogen oxide gas obtained by the nitration of anthraquinone compound, safely as an industrially useful alkali nitrate, without separating each component of the mixture.
CONSTITUTION: An anthraquinone compound is nitrated with nitric acid or a mixture of nitric acid and sulfuric acid. Tetranitromethane, which is produced by the reaction as a by-product, is separated to the vapor phase by the stripping with air, oxygen or inert gas, to obtain nitric acid vapor and nitrogen oxide gas containing tetranitromethane. The product is treated with an alkali solution, mixed with nitric acid, and at the same time, air, oxygen or inert gas is introduced to the system to effect the decomposition and stripping. The produced vapor component is introduced again into the alkaline absorption system to neutralize the decomposed liquid with an alkali, and recover as the alkali nitrate. The nitration product of anthraquinone compound is useful as an intermediate of dye.
