Abstract

PURPOSE:To detect original sizes without interference of a laser beam path by providing a laser beam emitting device on the lower side of an original placing plate, and providing photodetectors to the original cover side. CONSTITUTION:After an original of a size A3 is set, a laser oscillator 12 and a polygonal scanner 13 are turned on without modulated input. The scanner 13 is so arranged that the laser beam is reflected to the directions of photodetectors 6, 7 by the half mirrors 14, 15 disposed out of the effective image optical path. The light to the inner photodetector 6 direction is blocked by the original 3 and no outputs are produced in the photodetector. The outer photodetector 7 is not blocked by the original 3 and produces output pulses. Hence, it is possible to know that the original is of the size A3 by scanning the same with the laser beam and detecting the pulse signals prior to copying operation. If the original is of A4, the pulses signals are obtained from the photodetectors 6, 7 and the A4 is decided by ORing both outputs.
