Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the sound absorption performance of a sound absorber for the muffler of an internal combustion engine and prevent the clogging and corrosion of the sound absorber, by coating a porous metal piece with a heat- resisting binder containing a solid acid catalyst and by setting the binder. CONSTITUTION:A porous metal piece 1, which is unlikely to pulverize and break, is prepard as the body of a sound absorber. A heat-resisting binder 3 containing a solid acid catalyst 2 is painted and set on the porous metal piece 1 to suppress the clogging of tar and soot, improve the sound absorption performance of the sound absorber and prevent its corrosion due to high-temperature oxidation. The sound absorber is thus composed. To manufacture the sound absorber, a kneaded mixture including the binder 3 containing said catalyst 2 is painted on the porous metal piece and baked so that the mixture is set. In the sound absorber, the binder 3 containing the dispersed solid acid catalyst grains 2 is provided in the pores of the porous metal piece 1 and a porous coating 4 is provided on the metal piece, the binder and the catalyst.
