Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare an Al alloy that provides a material having good machinability, in particular, good property in treatment of chips after cold forging, by adding Pb, Bi and As to an Al alloy containing Mn.
CONSTITUTION: An Al alloy that comprises 1W2.5wt% Mn, 0.2W0.8wt% each of at least one element of three elements, Pb, Bi and Sn, and the remainder of Al and normal impurities. When each content of Pb, Bi and Sn is less than the lower limit, the effect of improving the machinability, in particular, treatment property of chips is little. When the content is larger than the upper limit, the elements are crystallized in crystal grain boundaries of the alloy and cracks are formed in cold forging of the alloy. The addition of these low melting point metals in effective even when only one metal is added, but it is highly effective when at least two metals are added. In the latter case, it is preferable that they are added in an eutectic composition having the lowest melting point or in a composition near the eutectic one. Further, Fe impurity lowers the cold forging properties of the alloy and Si impurity lowers the forging properties of the alloy, so that the low content of them is preferable.
