Abstract
PURPOSE:To provide an accurate paraboloid of revolution without leaving any uncut portion on a workpiece on the axis of its rotation, by effecting control to move the workpiece and a tool relative to each other in the directions of the axes of rotation of the tool and the workpiece so that their displacements comply with a prescribed relationship formula. CONSTITUTION:The line of intersection of a paraboloid of revolution, which is expressed as z=1/4alpha(x<2>+y<2>) where alpha denotes the focal distance, with an arbitrary inscribed ball, whose center is denoted by Oc, is a circle MM'. A line OcP extending on the center Oc and inclined at an angle of theta to an axis (z) is used as the axis of rotation of a tool. A line PQ is used as the radius of rotation of the tool. When a workpiece is rotated once around the axis (z), portions QQ', SS' of the inscribed ball are generated. When some of the generated spherical surface portions includes the circle MM', a portion MM' of the paraboloid is cut. The center Oc is moved along the axis (z) to the center of the ball located in contact with the vertex O of the paraboloid. At the same time, the length of the line OcP is altered. As a result, the paraboloid of revolution MOM' is generated. The relationship between the line OcP=a and another line OOc=b is defined by a formula. The positions of axes A, B of the generating equipment are controlled to conform with the formula when the workpiece is rotated.
