PURPOSE:To increase a printing speed by holding a printing head without moving the same when printing is unnecessary and by advancing the printing head to a printing position for printing when the printing becomes necessary. CONSTITUTION:A comparison circuit 3 comparing the code of an inputted character with a code set beforehand to decide whether printing is to be conducted or not, a skipped-figure counting circuit 4 counting the number of figures requiring no printing sequentially when the result of decision of the comparison circuit 3 shows no need of printing while delivering the number of figures requiring no printing counted so far when the result of decision shows the need of printing, and a head driving circuit 6 which, on receiving the number of figures requiring no printing delivered from the circuit 4, advances the printing head by the number of figures requiring no printing and thereafter operates to print the inputted character, are provided. When printing is not needed, the printing head is held in situ, and when printing becomes needed, the printing head is advanced to a printing position for printing.
