PURPOSE:To enable easy ascertaining of a current position of a vehicle, by a method wherein an advancung direction and a running distance of a vehicle are detected, and based on the two signals, the position of the vehicle is displayed in a road map on a display via a display drive means. CONSTITUTION:An azimuth detector 1, wherein a photo conductive cell and a direction magnet are combined together, a distance decision circuit 2 which outputs a step puls indicating a unit distance to a reduced scale of a running distance of a rotary sensor, and a display driver 4 are mounted. In the constitution, if a road map, being printed on a clear sheet, is placed on a matrix display 5, light is radiated to a point (a) from a lower part. If a vehicle is run by regulating the point (a) to a start position through operation of a manual switch 6, the outputs of the direction detector 1 and distance deciding circuit 2 shift in order indications in the display 5 via a pulse generator 3 and the driver 4 to display a current position on a map.
