Abstract
PURPOSE:At least one of GeH4, SiH4 and PH4 is combined with at least one of vaporized S, Se Te or its halide and they are thermally decomposed to produce chalcogenide glass. CONSTITUTION:S2Cl2 in the vessel 1 is carried with an Ar gas and simultaneously a GeH4 gas is sent through a pressure reducing valve 4 and a flow regulator 3, then through pipe 5 and a rotatable connector 6 into glass tube 7. Then, the glass tube 7 is heated with an oxyhydrogen flame 8, as being rotated at about 50rpm with the lathe 9, to effect the following reactions in the tube 7: GeH4 Ge+2H2 (about 500 deg.C), S2Cl2 2S+Cl (about 400-500 deg.C), xS+Ge GeSx, thus forming Ge-S glass deposited on the inner wall of the glass tube 7. The resultant glass tube is densed together with the Ge-S glass at about 600 deg.C into a rod, which is further drawn into a fiber to give the objective glass fiber.
