Abstract

PURPOSE: To separate and to collect the titled substance such as palmatine and/ or jatrorrhizine, etc. from a culture, by deriving a callus from a plant of the genus Tinospora of the family Menispermaceae, cultivating the callus or carrying out cell culture in a solution.
CONSTITUTION: A plant such as Tinospora Crispa DIELS of the family Menispermaceae, Tinospora rumphii BOEL, etc., belonging to the genus Tinospora of the family Menispermaceae is subjected to common tissue culture of a plant to intorduce a callus, which is subjected to subculture, callus culture or tissue culture in a solution for about 10 days is carried out, to give berberine alkaloid consisting essentially of palmatine and/or jatrorrhizine from the culture. A medium to be used is one which is used in the conventional tissue culture of a plant, obtained by adding a saccharide, an auxin, an amino acid, etc. to an inorganic medium composition for growing various kinds of plants. The collection of the titled alkaloid is carried out by a conventional process.
